My Childhood Memory

Growing up in the little town of Monroe, I have come to learn many, many things from my personal experiences that have happened there. One in particular stood out from the others as I was thinking of what I could post as one of my life defining moments. It all started when I was eight years old and had just learned how to drive a four wheeler..

Living in Monroe for 18 years of my life meant that I was a small town girl who lived almost in the middle of nowhere and loved to ride those four wheelers! My brother and sisters and I were always allowed to drive the wheelers as long as my parents were at home to look after us while we were riding them. This was always an important rule at our house and if the rule was ever broken, there was always a price to pay. So for the most part, we simply obeyed our parents by doing what we were told and not riding them while they were gone.

Well one day as my parents were heading into town for a couple of hours, they simply stated the rules loud and clear to us as they walked out the door. Almost all of the rules they recited went in one of my ears and out the other when all of a sudden I heard my mom say, "NOBODY RIDE THE FOUR WHEELERS WHILE WE ARE GONE." After that was said, my parents were gone and just us kids were left at the house.

Long story short, I ended up taking out one of our four wheelers against my parent's word. I was having a grand old time spinning doughnuts and riding all over the big hills when I decided to go up a steep hill I had never driven up before. Before I could make it to the top of the hill, the four wheeler went tumbling down the hill and I went down with it.

I ended up having scars that I still have to this day that remind me of what happened the day I disobeyed the rules of my parents. I learned a VERY valuable lesson that day and I can honestly say I have never made the mistake of taking the four wheeler without permission again.

  1. A few years ago I saw an accident where a girl was racing up a steep hill on a four wheeler. She was not as lucky as you were. Her limbs were in positions that they should not have been in. They ended up life flighting her to the hospital. It was not a pretty sight. My husband also saw one of his old friends get ran over by a four wheeler. His friend was racing and he fell off his bike. He was not wearing a helmet. He did not survive. So I strongly believe in obeying the rules when it comes to riding.
